GGotW: Everyone today is multifaceted, how do you describe yourself? 

Pix: I feel like a bunch of random parts put together. Like a random roulette of skills (sewing and cooking and roller derby and tinkering with machines, etc.) put into a package that’s perceived as this one object. People tend to be surprised that I’m not a total ditz; in the world, people seem to assume there’s not a lot going on here, whether due to the tattoos or my age I don’t know.

GGotW: What forms of art do you enjoy pursuing?
Pix: I play ukulele and sing, I paint and sculpt, I sew, I write, I bake; honestly anything artistic I will try. The artsy-er the better. A lot of pages around here are covered in doodles.

GGotW: What are your struggles?
Pix: I have chronic pain and severe anxiety disorders. I have fibromyalgia and a connective tissue disorder (EDS) that means my joints and cells are super stretchy. Works really well in my job as a life model! I can find some really neat positions. It also means I’m more prone to injury and, having only had this diagnosed at adulthood, that meant a lot of my youth was spent not understanding why I hurt all the time or why life was harder than it should be.

GGotW: What gets you through the day?
Pix: I have 2 cats I love, I drink a lot of tea and smoke a lot of weed. I love art and exploring what’s out there to enjoy. Knowing that I can’t control the situation always but I can control my reaction to it drives me to live Life™️ and look for what’s out there. GGotW: How have Canada's new marijuana laws affected you?
Pix: Laws: it’s interesting; they have made me feel more secure medicating out in the world, but it’s made my medication a lot more expensive. I’ve had a prescription for years now so it’s been a thing before it was legal. With recreational use being legal now, there are extra taxes on my medicine though. Less selection available for medicinal patients because it’s mainly going to recreational. So I’m conflicted. I’m glad it’s becoming more accepted because the alternative for pain relief is narcotics, and I’d rather avoid those side effects. Marijuana has a lot of medicinal benefits with dementia, cancer, epilepsy, etc; can you say that about tobacco or cigarettes, other similarly regulated products? 
GGotW: I see you use Alien in your self-description, how do you mean that?
Pix: I don’t understand people very much. It feels like everyone resonates on a frequency, and it’s hard to find complementary people. I feel like I am truly a default “human” body (not feminine not masculine but an equal mix of both) but I haven’t been able to shake the feeling that I don’t fit in. The stars have a massive draw, too.

GGotW: Where do you see yourself in a few years?
Pix: 
1: I hope to be found by a company that has the same ideals as I do and be their brand model.
2: I want to run a roller rink/bnb with every fibre of my being. I have all the details figured out, now it’s just finding an investor.
3: Just happy. I hope to be happy by then.

GGotW: How Long have you been in the goth scene?
E13: I have been in the goth scene for about 15 years, and I started modelling about five years ago. I never really had the courage to model before that, but after a few drinks and a cute girl convincing me that she would only post the good photos, I succumed pretty quick!

GGotW: I hear you're a top notch DJ, how did you get where you're at?
E13: I was a regular DJ at a night called Rock-N-Roll Highschool, but had to give up my residency for a better paying non-DJ gig, and I occasionally DJ at Sanctuary, Vancouver's premier goth night run by DJ Pandemonium. I DJ this weekend at Sin City Fetish Night, where I also get to play hostess and door whore.

GGotW: What are the hottest tracks you're playing lately?
E13: Right now some of my favourite tracks are from Ashbury Heights, Encephalon, Aesthetic Perfection, And One and Die Antword. I still love to drop some of the classics and even some new wave tracks because we do get quite a range of music lovers at Sanctuary, and I like to make it my job to get everyone on the dance floor at some point :)

GGotW: Does Vancouver, Canada have much of a Goth Scene?
E13: Vancouver is a small town and people sometimes think that because a lot of industrial music has come from Vancouver (Skinny
Puppy, Frontline Assembly, Left Spine Down) that the scene here must be rockin' but its not really. I think L.A. is still the nexus of goth central on the west coast :) I was there last spring and it was great! I totally understand why so many people love that city, if I could I would move there in a heartbeat!

GGotW: What Photographers have you worked with?
E13: I have worked with Shimona Henry of Pinup Perfection, David Denofreo of Black Opal Images, Grant Malo Photography, Atratus of Gothic BC and Patrick Parenteau of DVPIX and the list goes on.....

GGotW: Have you ever shot for a fashion line?
E13: I have modelled for Deadly Couture Latex in an Under the Sea Fasion Show, Judy Basha Designs and Lace Embrace Corsetier in a Historical Corset Exhibition. We are actually super lucky in Vancouver to have so many super creative people helping keep the scene alive and growing, so for that I am always thankful.

News: 6th Goth Shoot

A month ago I gathed a small band of Models and Photographers for a little location shoot under a Gothic theme, here in Victoria, Canada. This year we managed to get access to a metal foundry with shops and gear that we were allowed full access to.

Because the City of Victoria, had a conniption a few years ago over me making it a public shoot with a facebook page, and 80+ attendees, to a city park. I have now made these shoots invite only, and while I invited about 30 people, this year I only got two models and three photographers. Its all about time and availability,

I wonder if I announce this every year would other Models and Photographers from around the world be interested in organizing and participating in shoots in their areas? GGotW: Where do your influences come form?
S13: My modeling influences come from the Post-Punk music scene , the emergence of the Gothic culture and music of the mid 1980's, Victorian fashion, the Baroque era, and from Old School Gothic rock!!

GGotW: You seem to be a current hit in Alt modeling, what do you attribute that to?
S13: Thank you! : ) - I think that my current popularity stems from these things: the fact that I'm still modeling in my mid-40's is one reason! It is unusual for a woman of my age to still be modeling on a regular basis! I actually began modeling when I was 18 years old, as a mainstream Petite Model, but then switched to Alt Styled Modeling because I was more comfortable with it, being a Goth since I was 15 years old!!

I was forced to take a break from my modeling career, as my previous husband did not approve of it. After that relationship thankfully dissolved, I got right back into what I love to do most , and the rest is history!

Also , I am of Japanese- Canadian descent! I have an unusual look that you don't see that often, and that does help! Because I look young for my age, I am able to look younger in my photos, and this also is a plus!! I have a very positive and outgoing attitude, and I believe that this, in and of itself, has helped me to re-launch my career!

Being this age is beneficial, in that I feel the most self-confident that I have ever felt. Maturity does have its rewards.

GGotW: How does your music play into that current popularity?
S13: I have always loved music, and played in a Punk rock band when I was 18 to 25 years old! I believe that music and fashion are strongly intertwined and inter-related! Music and fashion modeling puts you in the foreground! They both attract attention from an attentive audience, and they are both creative in that they affect all of our senses! I think that being on stage and in front of the camera are both very similar experiences , and project a certain mood and affect. They both require confidence, creativity and energy! Being a Goth model and a Goth musician binds the two together in one intensely powerful creative force!

GGotW: Does being Asian or Canadian make it harder to model and find modeling work?
S13: The answer is both Yes and No! On one hand , being of a unique looking ethnicity can be fascinating to some photographers, and also being a mature model can be intriguing! It creates excitement because it is rare and different! On the other hand , many people in our society do not value maturity, or of being of an exotic , unique culture or background! So, I would say that it is both difficult and easy - it depends on who you're dealing with, and for what reasons! Some will love me for who I am and how I look; others will choose to overlook me altogether! It has been pretty much 50/50! Being Canadian is somewhat challenging, as most of the big Goth/Alt designers and businesses operate and thrive in the USA , UK , Australia , and Europe. The Alternative Scene in Canada is small and more limited, so I find that the Internet helps to put me in touch with the Alternative Modeling Scenes outside of my native country!

GGotW: Give us an idea of some of the photographers you've worked with?
S13: I work with photographers who are still in training, to some of the best in my location! Some have been students that are fine tuning their skills, whilst others are well-seasoned and experienced photographers who are very well-known and in high demand! I have also worked with photographers that specialize in Portraiture, Landscapes, Fashion and Hobbyists as well.

GGotW: Where have your images appeared?
S13: My images have appeared on various Goth / Alternative Fashion Sites , such as : Art of Adornment , Retroscope Fashions, Supervixens Boudoir Photography, Recollections, and Ms Purdy. I have photos that will soon be appearing on Kambriel, Chicstar, and Pink Label Corsets. I have been published on the following Alternative Fashion / Scene Magazines: Carpe Nocturne Magazine, EGL Magazine, and recently on fiXE Magazine!

GGotW: Tell the readers about your current musical works.
S13: Currently , the band I am part of: Groit, is in rehearsal mode , for upcoming performances in our local area. It is a mix of New Wave, Electronic, Goth rock and Industrial genres. We also write new music to add to our repertoire, to add variety and something fresh now and then! Our next performance will be in Winnipeg, for our annual New Year's Eve Goth event: Apocalypse 2011! I am really looking forward to this Night, as it is well-attended and is a big event for our local Goth community!

GGotW: When did you start Kryonetik?
Tf: Officially 2 years ago, after I wore some of my outfits to events and they wound up in magazines and photo shoots. Plus I was in an auto accident and off work for a while, so I had time to develop it

GGotW: What does Kryonetik sell?
Tf: I sell Cybergoth and industrial/futuristic style clothing and accessories for clubbing,costume, or daily wear

GGotW: Do you make all of it?
Tf: For Now Yes, I design and make all of it.

GGotW: What prompted you to start making clothes?
Tf: I started making outfits because I had trouble finding what I wanted to wear. I decided that it was time to start making my own designs.

GGotW: Where do you sell it?
Tf: Most of what I have sold has been within Canada and the US some in the UK, but I am on the internet, so worldwide.

GGotW: When did you start modeling?
Tf: I started modeling about 30 years ago but it didn't develop at that time. I started modeling again about 3 1/2 years ago and I have appeared on event flyers and have been in some magazines.

GGotW: Who have you worked with?
Tf: I have worked with Kindred's Muze Photography, Darkpartys, Holly Martin, DRL Photography, Wes Harkness Photography and Andrew Cromwell.

GGotW: What has been your most exciting modeling experience?
Tf: There were two sessions that were equally as exciting for me. The first one was doing a full nude shoot with Holly Martin at Dundas Square in Toronto at 5am. I literally had to jump into the other model's arms for the shot. The second was a full nude group shoot. We were on a subway platform in Toronto.

Goth shoot 2008

Don McCaskill of NightShadows Photography and his wife Sue McCaskill of Ravenwood Photography are gearing up for the annual Goth Shoot in Victoria, Canada, currently set for the 26th. This is a large group shoot they do every year. Inviting as many models and other photographers as possible. Last year there were three models and three photographers and a make-up artist, but a lot of great images.

They are still looking for the ideal location in Victoria, BC to shoot this, but Last year Beacon Hill Park made a great location, but this year Don wants to get a more Gothic feel to the images and a park just doesn't do it. Maybe something a little more industrial?

This year they're hoping for a much larger gathering of models. If your interested in being a part of the shoot, and can get yourself there, contact Don, and he'll add you to the contact list he's building.

*** Please Note ***
Model Releases are required for these shoots, so you must be 18yrs or have your legal guardian in attendance. Prior arrangements can be made as well.

Some Questions that Don has answered.

Q: How long will the models spend with each photographer?
A: As of yet we don't know how many Photographers and models there will be, so we'll probably have to wing it. The shoot is currently scheduled for 10am - 4pm.

Q: What is the compensation to the models?
A: This is a TFCD (trade for CD) shoot. Each model will receive a copy of all the images on CD and rights to use images that they appear in for their portfolio.

Q: Do the models make individual arrangements with each photographer prior to the shoot?
A: Individual arrangements can be made, and you can say that you won't shoot with a particular photographer. NightShadows and Ravenwood will have their own release forms at the shoot and arrangements can be made to view them in advance. Other photographers are being encouraged to bring releases.

Q: What are the photographs being used for after the shoot?
A: After the shoot the pictures are strictly for portfolio purposes unless other arrangements are made.

Q: Who provides the clothing/apparel for the shoot?
A: Clothing is provided by the model.It is up to them to fit the theme of Gothic. In some cases with the photographers, something may be arranged.

Q: Who is doing Make-up and Hair Styling?
A: Again this is usually up to the model, we are not a professional shoot. We are trying to find MUA and stylists for the shoot, and Caitlin did an excellent job last year, hopefully she'll be back this year, with others.

Q: What is a model release and why is it needed?
A: A Model Release Form is a contract drawn up between a photographer and model either before or after a shoot detailing where and how the images from the shoot may be used by the photographer, and model. It spells out what either party can do with the images and what either party gets from the project.

Q: Where can I get a release? Is it necessary?
A: The photographers will have them on the day of the shoot. If you want to see what you are signing in advance, a sample can be emailed to you.
Necessary? Essential!

Q: Can I tell other potential models about this shoot?
A: Yes! This is all about the-more-the-merrier. We want this to be a fun event, so by all means, let your friends know.

Just don't forget, this is a GOTH shoot. We want people dressed in gothic attire.

Profile: Frontline Films

Brian Clements is the Writer and Director of the films from Victoria's Frontline Films, a small company gaining recognition in the world of independent films. Last year's release of Meat Market 3 is being released on DVD this weekend at Lucky Bar on Yates St and now Frontline has another film ready for a Halloween release at the Roxy Theatre on Quarda St..

Meat Market 3 leaves behind the comedic elements and amateur production values of the
first two entries in the —Meat Market series in favour of a more straight-ahead horror approach with an additional psychological thriller influence. The movie opts primarily for a taut atmosphere of dread with a few good shocks and scares, and gore used only for maximum impact in generating ever-escalating story tension.

The Victoria DVD release will be at Lucky Bar at 517 Yates street on the evening of Friday, October 16th, from 8:30PM-midnight. Admission is $5. DVDs will be available for only $10, discounted $5 off the regular price of $15.

In the 1980's a book called Michelle Remembers helped dub the city of Victoria as the second Satanic Capital of the World after Geneva, Switerland. Brian Clement's new movie Dark Paradox explores the idea that this myth was not only partially true, but also partially inaccurate in suggesting the cult activity was Satanic when in fact it was based on the worship of ancient extraterrestrial "elder gods" in the vein of HP Lovecraft's fiction.

The Victoria premiere will be on Saturday October 20th at the Roxy Theatre at 11:30PM, after the theatre‘s regular screening schedule. Admission will be $7. The screening will be hosted by director Brian Clement, and DVDs of his other features will be available after the show.

NightShadows Photography is run by one of our own members here at Goth Girl of the Week. We've wanted to do profiles as part of the Goth Girl experience but a few interviews have failed and we've run out of Girls for the site so now is the time.

GGotW: Why the name NightShadows?
NS: I got the name when my wife and I were writing the script to a Vampire short film we were making. The film is called NightShadows and the name came out of the fact that Vampires are creatures of the night and keep to the Shadows.

GGotW: When did this all start?
NS: It was 1997, I was working for a guy with some Pro level Hi-8 video cameras that he said I was free to use any time he was busy in editing.

GGotW: Is that when you started photography?
NS: Hell no, I was taking pictures with my dad's Canon AE-1 back in the mid eighties. Then I got a gig with a newspaper shooting at the David Foster Celebrity Softball Tournament. That started my long life as a photographer.

GGotW: Who have you worked for as a photographer?
NS: The list is pretty long, but I started with The Victoria Star Newspaper, that's who I covered the David Foster games for. I then moved on to Cut: To Magazine and worked at Attractions Magazine for seven years. Other than that I've been freelance with some nice gigs here and there.

GGotW: What kind of camera do you shoot with?
NS: My wife and I just picked up a Canon 400D and she has a Canon T2, we both have Canon AE-1's and that has been my main camera for about 25 years.

GGotW: What is the differance between the Canon AE-1 that you've been using and the new Canon 400D?
NS: The Canon AE-1 is a film camera and in my opinion the work horse of the Canon family. The 400D, or Rebel XTi as it's known in North America, is a 10.1MP digital beauty. I'll be using it on the next goth shoot.

GGotW: So are you going to shoot film and digital now?
NS: No actually I'm looking at going completely digital so I'm selling off my film equipment on eBay. Once I sell all this I'm going to purchase another Canon XTi (400D)

GGotW: Last year you did two goth shoots, what are you plans for this year and why haven't you done one yet?
NS: Last summer I gathered four models and two photographers, my wife and myself, we shot two rolls of film each at the back of Victoria's Legislative Grounds and came up with some fantastic images. Then a little later in the year I took Rowen Bellamy and her boyfriend, Photographer Greg Forsberg, into Beacon Hill Park and did another shoot, so far the weather and my schedule have not co-operated so now we are looking at an August 26th shoot.

GGotW: What do you have lined up for that shoot?
NS: We have five models at the moment and a MUA (make-up artist). The theme we're aiming for is Elegant Goth, we want to get away from the Street Goth that we had last time. We're set to shoot in Beacon Hill Park and my wife and I have picked out some awesome locations.

GGotW: What else have you got planned?
NS: Not too much, I work full time as a Retail Sale Manager and have had a lot of overtime, but were I can I want to do more photography and model photography is what I really enjoy.

GGotW: Where can people find you on the net?
NS: Wow, I seem to be all over the place, but my main website is NightShadows and I spend a lot of time on DeviantArt. I also have accounts on Model Mayhem and Model Place.

News: Local film news

Filmmaker Brian Clement is ready to show his latest masterpiece at the Roxy Theatre later this month. Brian is the brain behind Meat Market 3, shot here in Victoria, Canada earlier this year.

Two shows only Friday Oct 20^th and Saturday Oct 21^st both at 11:15pm, tickets are $7 at the door.

Before that UVic is hosting the Victoria Symphony at the Farquhar Auditorium as they play the original score to F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent horror film classic, Nosferatu. Friday October 13th starts with a presentation of a pre-concert talk A Symphony of Horror, Desire, and Disgust: Murnau’s Modern Masterpiece, with “Vampire” expert Dr. Peter Gölz in the UVic Centre lobby at 7:15pm. Vampire Attire is encouraged.

Profile: Gothic BC

Gothic BC is a wonderful site full of links, art and images of parties and people.

The more than 5000 images are sorted by place, event or the venue that they occurred in or by person, a great way to sort and view the many images on the site. Their calendar is one of the best events calendars I've seen on the web. The forums talk about everything from clubbing to music and while the site is Vancouver based, the topics bleed into other areas of the gothic world.

This eight year-old non-commercial site is worth the visit for anyone in the scene, locally or not.
