GGotW: When did you first realize you were Goth?
V33: I was first introduced to gothic music by a friend when I was 16/17, so this was when I first learned about the subculture. A couple years later I started attending goth events and parties in my city and met people whose entire lifestyles were goth - from the music to the fashion to their interests. I realized that for the first time I found something that felt like me, and I’ve been a part of the subculture ever since.

GGotW: What is it that attracts you to the subculture?
V33: I love everything dark — the subculture allows me to express this through music, literature, fashion, and lifestyle. I’m also attracted to the creativity and originality of the people in the subculture.

GGotW: What started you modeling?
V33: When I was younger I was interested in fashion, but I never really thought about photographing myself or modeling. About 4 years ago I was going through a very tough time in my life- I’d just been diagnosed with a chronic illness and was having a lot of health issues, and I was also dealing with a bad breakup. To distract myself, I started dressing up and taking photos of my daily outfits and posting them online. I kept doing this for a little while before I realized that I was very passionate about modeling and photography. Although my first photos honestly weren’t that good, creating these images gave me confidence and I really started to see myself as beautiful. It was also at this time that I was contacted by New Rock to model for them - I remember being so excited haha. As time progressed, I started working with more brands and learning more about the actual photographic process itself - I purchased a DSLR, started learning about lighting and composition of photos, and taught myself photoshop.

GGotW: Who or what inspires you?
V33: So many things! While I try to remain inspired by ideas in my own head a lot of the time to try to be original, there are definitely a few artists and models that I’d love to mention. The first artist that comes to mind when people ask about my inspirations is a Polish painter named Zdzisław Beksiński. I used to study painting and drawing, and he was always my biggest inspiration then and now. I actually have a plan to get a few of his pieces tattooed :) Beksiński is known for creating creepy, dystopian surrealistic works. While a lot of Beksiński’s themes aren’t immediately present in my photography, his work is incredibly meaningful to me and has been my biggest inspiration for years. I’m also inspired by a lot of the models and artists I follow, including Mahafsoun, Threnody In Velvet, The Black Metal Barbie, Obsidian Kerttu, and many others.

GGotW: What photographers do you tend to work with?
V33: I don’t usually work with photographers - I take all my own photos! While I have shot with a few photographers in the past, modeling and photography is a creative outlet for me so I prefer to do all aspects of the shoot myself, from photography and editing to makeup and styling.

GGotW: Do you ever model outside the Goth aesthetic?
V33: Not usually. Alternative and gothic modeling is who I am, so I tend to stick to what feels like me. Even if I do a shoot that isn’t completely gothic, I still have black hair and tattoos, so the photos still look pretty alternative anyway.

GGotW: Do you work with any particular brands?
V33: I do! As I mentioned earlier, the first brand I ever worked with was New Rock. Since then I’ve expanded over the years, collaborating with brands and companies such as Killstar, Punk Design Shop, Malefic Apparel, Dirtymind Cosmetics, and EvaHair.

GGotW: How long have you modeled?

LtV:It's been about 4 years since I started, I love being in front of the camera and having a way to express myself creatively, I don't think I will be giving it up anytime soon.

GGotW: When you model, are you working for the photographer, yourself or a label?
LtV: It depends really, as each shoot is different, I try to stay true to my style and incorporate it into different projects. Most of the brands I shoot for like my style so it isn't really a problem. I think it's good to be versatile but keep in mind, not to shoot anything I know I won't be comfortable with.

GGotW: What is it about Goth that attracted you to the style?
LtV: I was fascinated by horror films and vampires as a child, growing up I discovered goth music and as much as I could express myself outwardly inspired by things I loved. Over time I developed a style that is distinctly 'me' incorporating gothic elements.

GGotW: Who influences you?
LtV: My influences vary, I would say music influences me a lot, also goth icons, like Vampira and Morticia Addams. I love vampires and the pale look.

GGotW: What is the scene like in the UK?
LtV:There is quite a large community of goths in the Uk especially London and bigger cities. There is great nightlife and many shows and events for those interested in the subculture.

GGotW: Where do you see yourself in the scene in the future?

LtV:I wish to become well established, meet lots of interesting people and further hone my craft! I don't think there is a 'right' or 'wrong' way to be goth though I've been through a lot of changes and one day I hope to be someone inspirational.

GGotW: Do you get to travel and see goth scenes in other areas?

LtV:I have lived in Ireland and know of the scene over there, though it's not quite as expansive it's still very much lively!

GGotW: What do you think is the biggest change since you started?
LtV: as far as modelling I think my self confidence has improved and I've become more aware of myself. As far as my involvement in the goth scene, I have noticed more and more young people getting interested , due to it's prevalence on the internet on various social platforms. As a teenager I was grouped together with all the other 'emo' or 'rockers' and I didn't have access to as much information as young people do nowadays.

GGotW: Do you think that Goth is growing or shrinking in The UK?
LtV:While it's not as active as in the beginning, there is still quite a lot of goths of various ages who are passionate about the subculture, who knows what the future will bring?
I feel in the UK we are more fortunate to have a variety of goth events and clubs, which has helped to keep it alive for so many years. I see a lot of younger people who are drawn to the style and music as well as the 'regulars' on the scene,so there's a good mix. I feel it's important to be open minded and accepting of others , as goth encompasses some diversity.

News: 6th Goth Shoot

Model: Niche Unique
Corset: Athanasia Fashions
Photo: Don McCaskill
A month ago I gathed a small band of Models and Photographers for a little location shoot under a Gothic theme, here in Victoria, Canada. This year we managed to get access to a metal foundry with shops and gear that we were allowed full access to.

Because the City of Victoria, had a conniption a few years ago over me making it a public shoot with a facebook page, and 80+ attendees, to a city park. I have now made these shoots invite only, and while I invited about 30 people, this year I only got two models and three photographers. Its all about time and availability,

Model: Betty Kate
Corset: Athanasia Fashions
Photo: Don McCaskill
I'll post more images from this year's shoot on my personal photography blog.

I wonder if I announce this every year would other Models and Photographers from around the world be interested in organizing and participating in shoots in their areas? Could we get an Annual LA Goth Shoot, an Annual Whitby Goth Shoot, or would you attend the Annual Salzburg Goth Shoot? Would you be a model, photographer, Make-up Artist, wardrobe assistant? Lets hear your comments and see what we can do for next year.

GGotW: Can you give us a quick bio of you?
JL: Model, designer & photographer Jessie-Lynne. I am currently featured on Gods Girls, Deviant Nation, Zivity & my personal website. I have been modeling for over 7 years now, and over the years my love for fetish & vintage fashion have grown. I finally decided to combine the two with my new line Lush Latex. Lush Latex bridges the gap between fashion & fetish. When I'm not working on my designs for my latex line or at a photoshoot, I'm out taking photos. My photography & modeling work has been published in various magazines. Over the course of the years I've had the opportunity to work with some amazing people. I'm thankful to have worked with such talented artists. I look forward to continuing to create art for years to come.

GGotW: What got you started modeling?
JL: Ever since I was little I was always striking a pose, literally just flip through any photo book of me as a child. Photography is also a huge passion of mine, I just love creating art with such talented people. I think what really got me into modeling was that I was a bit of a tom boy growing up. I guess I got sick of getting grass stains from playing football with the boys! These days you won't find me leaving the house with out a pair of stilettos even in a foot of snow.

GGotW: We understand you have a cover on Status Ink Magazine, how did that happen?
JL: I actually had been in contact with Steff who is a fellow Gods Girl in regarding Status Ink. After submitting my photos to them they asked me if I would be interested in doing a cover shoot for them, OF COURSE I would! Next thing I know I'm shooting for Status Ink's March issue!!!

GGotW: It sounds like you seem as comfortable in front of the camera as behind, what keeps you in front of it?
JL: I'm incredibly comfortable in front of the camera it comes natural to me ever since I was younger. I love seeing the way photographers portray me, I guess I love being in front of a camera as much as I love being behind one.

GGotW: As a model who have you worked for?
JL: I have worked for numerous people over the years and have been featured on handfuls of websites. I have modeled for Gods Girls, Zivity, Deviant Nation, Mother May I, 426 Brand, Narcisse Designs. I've also been featured in various print over the years as well as music videos & band dvds.

GGotW: Who would you like to work with, models or photographers?
JL: I adore the model Mosh and am looking forward to working with her when I make my move to California. Other then that I've been lucky enough to work with many talented artists over the years, I'd love to get behind Lithium Picnic's lens once more!!! There is a list of photographers I'd also love to collaborate with one of these days at ModelMayhem.. Any takers ;)

GGotW: You have your own fashion line, tell us how it came about.
JL: Yes as a matter of fact I do have my own fashion line, its called Lush Latex. I have always had a love for fetish fashion and have been sewing ever since I was younger. I always had a hard time finding latex that I was in love with, I had ideas in my head of what I wanted but could never find it! I decided a little over a year ago to fiddle with the idea of creating latex designs, next thing you know I'm running Lush Latex. I absolotuly adore latex in every which way, it photographs beautifully and feels amazing on. Lush Latex bridges the gap between fetish and fashion, I try to make designs that women can wear out and about. I've even made every girls favorite little black dress and also have your must needed accessories!

GGotW: What do you make?
JL: I make dresses, lingerie, tops, skirts, thigh highs, hair pieces.. you name it I can pretty much make it!

GGotW: Where do you sell it?
JL: Currently it is available only on the website Lushlatex.com it will soon be available at a handful of boutiques.

GGotW: What led you to work on sites like Gods Girls and DeviantNation?
JL: I have been modeling for years now and was always interested in being a part of a community like DN & GG. I shot ages ago back in 2003 for a website called Suicide Girls. For some time I was a limbo girl until the website lost my set, then due to all the controversy and change of their contract I decided to stick to DN & GG. Honestly, I couldn't be happier I love both of the websites, they have such a great community of people!

GGotW: What is you personal favorite accessory?
JL: I'm in love with this watch I received as a gift not that long ago by designer Betsey Johnson. It pretty much never leaves my wrist unless a photographer requests it, I have a over a handful of watches but this one I swoon for.

GGotW: Have you worked with other models, if so who?
JL: Unfortunately I haven't really had a chance to shoot with many other models, but I'm looking forward to shooting with some in the future. There are a few upcoming shoots that are in the works, I'm really excited for them!!

GGotW: What is Chicago's night scene like?
JL: The Chicago night life scene rocks.. I've always had a lot of fun in Chicago. I used to be pretty involved in the Chicago nightlife for a little I was hosting events & tending bar. I have a soft spot for Electro and we have a pretty decent scene here for that. One of my favorite events in Chicago is at a bar called Sonotheque the events called "Dark Wave Disco" its once a month and features some really good djs out of Chicago. If your looking for something to do on the week days every Monday is Rehab at Evil Olive, its a really fun night with a typical turn out of 500+ weekly.

GGotW: What is prompting the move to California?
JL: I'm moving to California because I'm over the cold weather here, it will also allow me to shoot year round on location. I'm really looking forward to the move, I have a lot of friends from California that I miss & can't wait to see!

GGotW: Are you headed for an acting career? Hollywood?
JL: Nope, if anything it will make it easier for me to shoot with photographers since there are a lot more photographers in my niche there.

RIP: Bettie Page

December 12/08 -- Legendary model and pin-up queen Bettie Page passed away yesterday in an L.A. hospital of pneumonia after having suffered a heart attack. Page was 85.

She captured the imagination of the 50's with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality, she has become the icon of today's Rockabilly, Burlesque and other styles of gothic modeling. Merchandise featuring her image is in shops around the world and has become more and more visible as she herself became a recluse.

Page was born to a poor family in Tennessee on April 22, 1923. While her birth certificate spelled her name "Betty," she changed the spelling later in life to "Bettie."

At a time when few women pursued a college education, Page earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from Peabody College in Tennessee in 1944, according to her official biography.

Her teaching career, however, was hampered by her looks, she said.

"I couldn't control my students, especially the boys," she is quoted as saying.

After her modeling career ended, Page returned to Peabody College to work on a master's degree, the bio said. Her southern drawl and a refusal to sleep with a Hollywood producer hampered her acting career, according to her bio. "I wouldn't have gone to bed with him anyway. He was a creep. He drove off in his big car and scolded me, 'You'll be sorry.' I wasn't."

The Web site, BettiePage.com, logs about 20 million hits a month, Roesler said. A TVGuide.com poll recently placed Bettie Page as the "ultimate sex goddess," outscoring others such as Marilyn Monroe.

iReport.com: has set up a place for fans to send tributes to Bettie Page

more news on the Legendary pin-up model can be found at CNN, Entertainment Weekly, and Google's AP News page.

2nd Feature: Maybe

gothgirl MaybeWhen Maybe first appeared in a March mini-feature for Goth Girl of the Week, she was barely dry from her nearly matricidal entry into the world. Now at 8 months old, Maybe is coming into her own as a small person, a small goth-punk model and even a small Hellraiser.

Maybe has learned quickly, from Mommy and Daddy that any day can be Halloween! With collections of skulls, gargoyles and swords, pet snakes and cats, and near constant musical stimulation, home is a step or two closer to Samhain than the house next door. One afternoon of dress up fun resulted in a "gothed out" Maybe, lounging on Da-da who was wearing his Pinhead t-shirt. The resulting pictures that Mommy snapped ended up in the hands of The Engineer, and one is now featured at DougBradley.com, the official website of the legendary Hellraiser actor, who brought Pinhead to life.young goth girl Maybe

In the quiet times of Maybe's mad world, stories and snacks rule. Whether it's Goodnight Moon, The Great Shark Hunt, or one of Dad's epileptic epilogues, nothing relaxes a goth girl's blue eyes like a full tummy and good spoken words.

Maybe's older brother, Zane, has been hard at work trying to teach his baby sister Tang Soo Do forms (Zane himself is a green belt). Maybe, ever pragmatic, however is focusing her energy on crapretty goth girl, Maybewling and holding her bottle with her feet! Zane need not worry though, Maybe is a tough cutie and is teething tenaciously. She doesn't care for toys or teething rings...NO- Maybe crews and chomps on peoples fingers! This zombie like chewing began months ago, yet not one pearly white has made an appearance as of yet.

Can't walk?....Doesn't have teeth yet?...Lacking in hair?...No problem! With the true punk ethic, of "What you don't have doesn't matter", Maybe and Mommy's camera are having a ball with her blooming goth-baby modeling career.

Got your own Goth Baby? Send us some pics and we'll give her a mini-feature. Been a GGotW previously, got something new, contact us.

Goth shoot 2008

Don McCaskill of NightShadows Photography and his wife Sue McCaskill of Ravenwood Photography are gearing up for the annual Goth Shoot in Victoria, Canada, currently set for the 26th. This is a large group shoot they do every year. Inviting as many models and other photographers as possible. Last year there were three models and three photographers and a make-up artist, but a lot of great images.

They are still looking for the ideal location in Victoria, BC to shoot this, but Last year Beacon Hill Park made a great location, but this year Don wants to get a more Gothic feel to the images and a park just doesn't do it. Maybe something a little more industrial?

This year they're hoping for a much larger gathering of models. If your interested in being a part of the shoot, and can get yourself there, contact Don, and he'll add you to the contact list he's building.

If you want to see what has been done in the past check out 2006 and 2007.

*** Please Note ***
Model Releases are required for these shoots, so you must be 18yrs or have your legal guardian in attendance. Prior arrangements can be made as well.

Some Questions that Don has answered.
Q: How long will the models spend with each photographer?
A: As of yet we don't know how many Photographers and models there will be, so we'll probably have to wing it. The shoot is currently scheduled for 10am - 4pm.

Q: What is the compensation to the models?
A:
This is a TFCD (trade for CD) shoot. Each model will receive a copy of all the images on CD and rights to use images that they appear in for their portfolio.

Q: Do the models make individual arrangements with each photographer prior to the shoot?
A: Individual arrangements can be made, and you can say that you won't shoot with a particular photographer. NightShadows and Ravenwood will have their own release forms at the shoot and arrangements can be made to view them in advance. Other photographers are being encouraged to bring releases.

Q: What are the photographs being used for after the shoot?
A:
After the shoot the pictures are strictly for portfolio purposes unless other arrangements are made.

Q: Who provides the clothing/apparel for the shoot?
A:
Clothing is provided by the model. It is up to them to fit the theme of Gothic. In some cases with the photographers, something may be arranged.

Q: Who is doing Make-up and Hair Styling?
A: Again this is usually up to the model, we are not a professional shoot. We are trying to find MUA and stylists for the shoot, and Caitlin did an excellent job last year, hopefully she'll be back this year, with others.

Q: What is a model release and why is it needed?
A: A Model Release Form is a contract drawn up between a photographer and model either before or after a shoot detailing where and how the images from the shoot may be used by the photographer, and model. It spells out what either party can do with the images and what either party gets from the project.

Q:
Where can I get a release? Is it necessary?
A: The photographers will have them on the day of the shoot. If you want to see what you are signing in advance, a sample can be emailed to you.
Necessary? Essential!

Q:
Can I tell other potential models about this shoot?
A:
Yes! This is all about the-more-the-merrier. We want this to be a fun event, so by all means, let your friends know.

Just don't forget, this is a GOTH shoot. We want people dressed in gothic attire.

Mini-Feature: Maybe

An amazing e-mail showed-up in our box and we just had to shared it with you. This is little Maybe. She's three months old, and Mom, Jennifer and Dad, Stephen have passed their goth/punk fashion sense on to her, as you can see. Rather than answer interview questions for us, Maybe opted to droll on the microphone. (How do you dry these?) If Mom and Dad allow, we may follow Maybe in her Gothware annually.

See you don't have to be a model in you own right to be on Goth Girl of the Week we just need you to email us with some pictures and be prepared to answer a few questions for the interview. We're easy to get along with and are constantly changing our format to accommodate new models. Check our Rules and consider becoming our next Goth Girl of the Week.

GGotW: What got you into the Gothic lifestyle?
VK: I would have to say the Fashion overall, or at least the anti-fashion. I'm more into romantic styled dress and venetian masquerade styled goth.

GGotW: What is your definition of Gothic Lifestyle?
VK: My definition, well it's hard to define the goth per say, as it falls into MANY different categories and subcultural spin offs. I would have to say that above all, Goth is about intellectual individuals who adore different periods of dark fashion, music, literature, and art.

GGotW: Where do you live?
VK: Southern California, all over. I love the cites, Los Angeles, Burbank, Pasadena, and all of Orange County. I don't ever want to leave.

GGotW: Do you work in the gothic community, or do you work somewhere that you can dress goth?
VK: As in work, I assume you mean an actual job. I work in the Paranormal, Metaphysical, and Ammunition area. I have my own radio show that I co-host with my fiancee about the Vampire subculture and the occult, I do much in the vampire community overall, and I work a regular day job making Ammunition (and I love it, who else can say they go to work to blow things up).
My style has never been much of a problem, it puts people off a bit, but in the end they realize that I am just like them only a bit more elegant. I never felt that I have to hide who I am, nor will I ever, people just have to understand that having a more diverse work place makes things fun.

GGotW: What draws you to pose and model in the gothic style?
VK: The allure and mystery of it all. When you stop and look at a Bud Light Babe or a Playboy Bunny, you see everything. Their personality, sexuality, sensuality, and girlie bits. It's different with alternative modeling, I love the 50's vamps and femme fatales, I want so much to be like them although I know it will never happen. They create a certain sense of mystery, fear, and seduction that you don't see in Maxim or Playboy and I love it.

GGotW: Who does most of your pictures?
VK: My fiancee, it's easy and it's helping him develop his photography. It's a win win situation, I am very comfortable with him. Sometimes I do my own photography.

GGotW: Have you been paid to model?
VK: I'm still starting out, so no I have not gotten paid to do what I do. Just trying to build my portfolio and resume (which is becoming impressive if I do say so myself).

GGotW: What is your favorite image to date?
VK: My favorite would have to be the "Hollywood Dream", it just screams controversy, which is one of my favorite things if you haven't already guessed. So many people claim to know what it means, they all see it as so many different things. For example: The Movie Industry, Porn Industry, Trends and Fads in Hollywood, Sexual Fetishes, etc.

GGotW: What do you have planned for the future?
VK: A coffee table book, I don't want to reveal to many details, but it will be like a macabre fairytale pin-up book.

GGotW: Where can people find you on the net?
My portfolio, gallery, and personal stats.
My artwork and photography
My myspace is

GGotW: Do you have any advice for people looking to model and get into the community?
VK: My advice, don't ever give up no matter what, if people tell you that your never going to succeed then prove them wrong (this includes those of you under 5'5" which is minimum height for modeling). Use your common sense, no webcam shots, have someone take your first photos for you, start on a good modeling network such as ModelMayhem and set down some rules for yourself.
Another important thing, as tempting as it may be, Suicide Girls will not make you big in a hurry. If you are trying to break away from it and go for high fashion, you will ALWAYS have that dent in your past.

GGotW: Tell us about your fangs, who made them and why did you go with custom made?
VK: I knew this question was coming. My fangs, well I had a fangsmith in Southern California do them, he goes by the name of Psykic Fangs. I went with custom because I was sick of seeing all of these vampire character models with plastic, unrealistic, and scarecrow fangs all over the place. I helped him out, got him going, even modeled for his site and now he's a success and great at what he does. I wear them for more than just modeling, they make me feel good and I think are a beautiful accessory to everyday life. The looks and comments I get are good more often than not and I love the reactions that I get out of them. He does mail orders, but prefers walk ins.

GGotW: Current hair colour?
VK: Poppy Red, it was a nightmare to get looking as good as it does.

GGotW: Why that colour?
VK: I wanted something different, I was tired of looking like Rogue from X-men (which is the way my hair was before). I did it mostly for my BloodRayne cosplay and decided I liked it, so It's been this way since October 2005.

GGotW: What got you into the Gothic lifestyle?
LS: 26 years ago when we were hanging out with the punks in Baltimore we knew we weren't as cruel as the punks but wanted to be creative in our look. so we made others think before they acted and called ourselves "individualist" and eventually since we preferred more synthesized music reffered to ourselves as "syntech-glam rockers". it wasn't until around the time that m.manson came out that the whole "goth" word was used.

GGotW: How do you define the Gothic Lifestyle?
LS: Being creative, original and accepting yourself and presenting that as your presence on the outside. when people make rude comments instead of cursing or being rude back ask them questions and get them to understand that you did not judge them for their comment but make them realize that you are not "evil" or "mean" and that you are who you are without a classification.

GGotW: What part of the US are you in?
LS: Washington, DC

GGotW: Do you work in the goth community, can you work in your style, or is it an after work style.
LS: This is me 24/7. I am a goth/fetish fashion model as well as a DJ for the Goth-Industrial Scene at DC's Midnight. and have guested at a few fetish events in Miami as well as North Carolina

GGotW: What draws do Goth pictures?
LS: The uniqueness in style and not thinking that you are the hottest thing on the planet. and showing your inner beauty to the world through film.

GGotW: Who does most of you pictures?
LS: Larry Bradby mostly as well as Charlie Pilzer, Angel Morales and John Holmes.

GGotW: Have you been paid to model, what was the experience like?
LS: Yes it was alot of fun and the photographer allowed my input to improve the concept he had for me so that it would be more fetishy than a nude shoot.

GGotW: What is your favorite image to date?
LS: I would have to say my fetish angel pic. although it was taken in 2001 i have always loved that pic and my facial expression is just too angelic to even try to redo.

GGotW: What is planned for the future?
LS: I plan on touring with my djing all over the states and do even more modeling especially for the fetish/goth clubs that i dj for.

GGotW: Where can people find you on the net?
LS: I am all over, I have 2 different accounts on Myspace: modellondonshadows as well as londonshadows. I'm also on Model Locate #4427, ModelMayhem.com, One Model Place, Retro Kitten, www.cityevents.tv, talent hunter.com, Castlist and Muse Cube.

GGotW: Do you have any advice for the younger Goths looking to model and get into the community?
LS: Be true to yourself and always accept conformist comments with an open mind and a clear head to get people to realize that the "goth scene" and community is one of the most civilized in the world and just get people to realize that "we are not satanic and that the media loves making us into monsters that are not in horror films.

As most of my signatures are on aol, yahoo and msn says" Just Relax and Enjoy the Ride."
