Goth Girl of the Year 2007 Winner

We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2007 Goth Girl of the Year.

London Shadows

The sexy DJ was our second feature of 2007.

It was a tough race this year as the membership could not make a clear decision and last year's winner was unable to get back to us in time to vote. The public voting system worked fantastically and we thank Poll Daddy for their great work.

Over 500 members of the public voted, some spurned on by the girls and their own blogs, there was one that got off to a fast start but in the end Whitembrace captured 15% of the public vote and Violet Eyes and DJ N3cr0phelia both got 12%. But the public vote only counts for 1 vote, the members of GGotW, those of us working behind the scenes on the site each get a vote, and our votes were all different until the last member's vote was read.

GGotW: How long have you modeled?
AL: Up until the age of 18, I absolutely refused to be in photos at all! When I was studying computers at polytech, my friend Justin, an artist, told me about a girl in his class who he thought I should meet. This turned out to be the photographer from Gothique Noir, who I agreed to model for a shoot, and we ended up doing two shoots together. I still haven't done any paid or professional work, but am keen to if the right oppurtunity comes up.

GGotW: What got you started?
AL: Meeting the photographer/artist from Gothique Noir, Jess. I was already a fan of her work and we had alot in common, and I was in awe of her talent, I really wanted to be a part of her work, and I loved the thought of being part of her artwork. We both had Emily Strange bags, and 'Tim Burton style' shoes, and this was going to be the beginning of a beautiful working relationship.

GGotW: What was your first shoot?
AL: I think it was around August 2005, with Gothique Noir, it was quite casual, we were just students taking photos in the polytech studio, but nearly ended up burning the place down when we almost forgot to blow out the candles we had lit when we took a break!

GGotW: Who have you shot with?
AL: Gothique Noir, twice, and Paul Michaels Photography. I wish there were more options available for gothic/alternative models in New Zealand, its hard to get work, especially paid! I would really like to get work modelling for gothic clothing companies but I know theres just not enough work to make a career of it.

GGotW: What was your best experience on set?
AL: Not having had much experience, I dont really have any stories to tell, or anything amazing thats happened. Apart from leaving the candles burning, and a bit of a nipple slip once (who doesn't have that happen at some stage?!), theres not much to tell.
The most awkward moment though, has got to be posing on a rubbish bin in a graffiti covered alleyway. It had been raining so it was really slippery and I had big chunky shoes on, and I ended up climbing onto an abandoned heater to get onto the bin, then sprawling myself all over
this slightly wet, dirty rubbish bin, trying not to fall off an holding on for dear life, as it was on a steep angle. The photographer was trying to get a contrast, classic gothic against city urban
graffiti, but I was too busy trying not to fall off, to really give any expression other than 'get me off here!'.

GGotW: How into the goth scene are you?
AL: I hate the word 'scene'!!! I was gothic' long before I heard of the term, so I was surprised to find out there was a whole 'scene' of people out there who had the same viewpoint of life. I personally don't like being called 'goth', as I prefer to describe myself as being gothic.
It may sound stupid, but 'goth' these days is a word that people who don't deserve to use it try to compliment themselves with. You know, the ones who are practically emo, but are like 'I like My Chemical Romance, I like Nightmare Before Christmas, I wear black, I cut myself, blah blah blah, Im a goth'. And they say it with pride. So I find it almost an insulting label, as it puts me in a similar category as them. Whereas gothic...now, theres a term that puts beautiful images in my mind. Gothic is midnight in a cemetery, long black dresses, and candlelight. Gothic is everything I love, describes the whole world I live in.
Anyway...Im not really in the 'scene' at all. I began my gothic existence alone, and thats where it will remain. I do have friends, but they are mostly the friends I had at school - the general 'misfits' who all hung out together. I like the fact that my friends are different to me, and not 'in the scene'. We dont really have a goth scene in New Zealand anyway, like we dont have goth clubs, though we do have a Fetish Ball annually in Christchurch. I am a dedicated metalhead though, and I guess you could say I am more into that scene, although really I just have my own scene! :-p
Online, its a different story, as I do like to meet other gothically minded people, and visit gothic sites. I even had my own gothic/altervative lifestyle ezine, which I hope to reinvent in 2008,
when I get some time.

GGotW: What lead you into the all things Gothic?
AL: I was always drawn to the dark side, a big fan of classic horror movies, horror novels, Edgar Allan Poe, etc even as a child, and as I got older it became more dominant in me. As I started choosing my own clothes, I was drawn to darker clothes, and I liked things like skirts and dresses, that were considered unfashionable. At school, I always got comments like 'Why do you dress like a slutty vampire?'. But I didnt realise there were other people who lived like me. I was very drawn into my own world, and had no idea that there were other people who lived like me. There werent other goths at school either, so it wasnt til I was quite old, maybe 15?, that people started asking if I was goth or not. And I'd just say 'What the fuck? Im just me'. So I just led myself in the direction that life pushed me, and ended up gothic, so I got myself into the scene...though I do believe I live in my own scene, really - I definitely have my own twist on the traditional goth style.

GGotW: What is you favorite aspect being Gothic?
AL: Because we live differently to most of society, we can all bond over our experiences. We've all been persecuted against, we've all known what its like to be different. So we have that in common. But more importantly we like things that most people dont like, so when we meet people who like the things we do, its special. Like if I meet someone who shares my love of B-grade, old school horror, it means alot to me, because its so unusual. And despite the fact that we're always accused of looking 'scary', most of us are friendly and down to earth people.

GGotW: What do you do when your not modeling?
AL: I'm obsessed with computers, and still spend alot of time with them. I live with my boyfriend, and we spend most of our free time together, fortuntely he shares my passion for horror movies and metal. I work in retail, which I hate, but am going to art school next year. And I spend way too much time watching CSI and Law and Order (and its spin offs).

Violet Eyes`s Site

ChestWaistHipsCorset
Imperial34"27"34"20"
Metric86cm69cm86cm56kg

GGotW: What is your favorite photograph of yourself?
VE: I have a black and white art nude one over a box that always gets a lot of attention, My favorites seem to change almost weekly though, I'm always pushing and striving to do better pictures and use more wacky outfits. Maybe One day i will have one that captures what I'm all about but until then I'll just keep on trying!

GGotW: When did you start modeling?
VE: Approx 6 years ago, and i haven't looked back since. I have been performing for approx. 5 years now also.

GGotW: What got you started in modeling?
VE: When i was 16 i was scouted by a high fashion agency- although flattered it wasn't what i wanted to do- I had discovered Dita and Bettie and wanted to wear rubber and corsetry. I set myself up on a photography website for a giggle and the day after had a photographer contact me regarding a shoot- I enjoyed it so much that i never looked back!

GGotW: Where did the name Violet Eyes come from? Or is it VioletEyes?
VE: I see so many variations of my name out there- Its Violet Eyes and it came from many influences- the meat puppets song, the song "Violet" by "hole" and the fact that i had some violet colored contact lenses and someone once shouted "oy violet eyes" at me- it kinda stuck!

GGotW: How did you get involved in the performance side of things?
VE: Again when i was much younger i was at a sleep over and ate night ch4 had a burlesque performer on it- I was hooked from there and did everything i could to find out more about it. The Pole dancing came at a later stage when i wanted to do something a little more different and the fire just seemt like a natural progression from there.

GGotW: Why was fire a natural progression?
VE: Why not! I have always been a fan of live music and the amount of times i have been in awe by the fire performers- it just seemt like a natural progression to try and step my act up a little. God knows what i will want to do next when I'm bored of the fire play!

GGotW: Where can readers in england see your upcoming performances?
VE: Everything is logged on my website at www.violeteyes.co.uk - My next burlesque show is for the Devolution Magazine Christmas party at the Face Bar in reading.

GGotW: Are you touring outside of the UK any time soon?
VE: I'm always up for working all over- hoping to get to Las Vegas again next year and maybe do a tour of the coast and end up in San Francisco, but nothing has been finalized as of yet- keep checking my website out for updates!

DJ N3cr0phelia`s Site

Imperial41"30"43"5'4"
Metric104cm76cm109cm162cm

Dj N3cr0phelia is a graduate student from Puerto Rico majoring in English literature with a minor in comparative literature. She's a year away from completing her Master's degree, which is the most important thing to her right now. She's fascinated by language, its mechanics and its psychology, and is in love with words.
N3cr0phelia's been winning awards, minor ones, of course, for pieces of prose, essays and poetry since she was in the fourth grade.

DJ N: I work as a tutor and teacher's assistant at the UPR, where I study.
I took piano lessons when I was younger, and I own a synthesizer, but wouldn't dare say that I play. For a short time, I was a member of a local band called RazorSun, but never got to perform with them, haha.
So it's safe to say that I'm a big music enthusiast, but I lack the skill, so I just listen, and sometimes, spin and mix. I'm a Dj at local goth clubs. I'm proud to be a staff member and Dj for Radio Clandestina, thanks to whom I've met musicians that I'm a big fan of, and have been a guest Dj for Alto Dominio.

DJ N: As a hobby, I like to draw, paint and do some minimal graphic design.
My website is an example. In it are contained some of my drawings and paintings, which are quite childish, but sincere.
I paint in oil and acrylics, and have been commissioned in the past.
Some of my artwork and pseudo-photography can be found at my deviantart account. I am inevitably immersed in the "goth" subculture, but I try hard not to be absorbed by the vanity that sometimes surrounds me.

GGotW: What got you into the goth scene?

DJ N: Oh, this is a tricky one. Although I discovered the local scene when I was about 16 years old, I think I was always kind of "goth" before I even knew what "goth" was. Even as a little girl, I had somewhat darker fixations and aesthetic taste... I started dressing mostly in black at around 12, when I fell in love with Edgar Allan Poe and wrote angsty poetry because the world didn't understand me. I suppose angst was the root of it all.
Then I started discovering bands that sang about things I felt. And then there was the internet, of course, where I started connecting with people with similar ideals and taste in music.

GGotW: What got you into radio work?

DJ N: Oh, I'm sorry if I was misleading, it's not radio work. I spin at local clubs, where I can at least see everybody dancing.
The person who got me into that was a friend, Dj Wanker from Radio Clandestina, who suggested I spin at a female vocalist themed goth party. He introduced me to club deejaying by inviting me and teaching me how to do it.

GGotW: What is you favorite thing about the gothic subculture?
DJ N: It gets to a point where you forget how things are in the outside world, haha, so we take it for granted. It is when I socialize in groups of conservative people, or who are mostly into pop culture, or from other "scenes," that I become fully aware of how much I enjoy the company of other "goths" - even when they annoy me. I don't know how it works in other countries, but here, it's like a big, dysfunctional family where everyone knows (and sometimes makes fun of) one another, but we accept each other. It's a network where you know people are bound to have at least a few things in common with you, and that makes way for easier understanding.
Regular people don't laugh as hard as your jokes sometimes, when you're a goth.

GGotW: Who's your favorite group to spin right now?
DJ N: I don't think I have a favorite group to spin, I always try to play whatever makes people dance. An empty dance floor dissapoints me.
Lately it seems, the noisier, the better, for most club kids... Combichrist, Terrorfakt, Xotox, Agonoize are requested a lot.
I personally like to spin either really silly or cheesy 80s synthpop songs. Surprisingly, people like dancing to them!

GGotW: Where do you spin?
DJ N: There's no definite venue, it all depends on where the crew from RadioClandestina.com organize the events to be.
On the 10th I'll be spinning at our biggest yearly goth event, NeKropolis 6, I'm excited about that.

GGotW: How often do you spin?
DJ N: Not as often as I'd like because I'm very busy lately, but I try to whenever the boys from Radio Clandestina invite me.

GGotW: How would you describe the Puerto Rico goth scene?
DJ N: It's happy, ironically! For goths, that is...
I have no source of comparison except from what I hear from online friends and from the bands that have come to play... many of them comment how bouncy and friendly puertorican goths are. True, wearing goth gear and makeup is a bit too hot for the tropics, especially with all the bouncing around that we do, but it's lots of fun.

Metric91cm81cm91cm175cm75kg

Lyliack
is a Blonde haired, brown eyed, goth and fetish model, who's been modeling for damn near 20 years. She does it as a hobby, rather than a primary occupation.

Shes also a singer who landed a gig singing the National Anthem at the Caged Supremacy fights in Arizona. She also works as a make-up artist who's done everything from bridal, to club glam, to special effects work.

GGotW: When did you start modeling?
Lyliack: I started modeling about 15 years ago. Wow, that makes me feel old. lol

GGotW: Why did you start modeling?
Lyliack: I was tall, especially for my age, very photogenic, and everyone always complimented me on my eyes. A good friend who was also a photographer, suggested I let him take some shots, give it a try, see if I liked it. I started doing special effects/theatrical make up about the same time, and who better to practice on than myself? lol I realized I could wear a variety of looks, colors and styles with ease, which also made me an excellent candidate for a model. I already had a lot of acting experience as well as experience as a vocalist, so it seemed natural -- and, it was a lot of fun for me! Still is! It comes very easy for me, so I'm very lucky, and by being able to do my own hair/make up and having the acting and musical experience, I have a lot of options, which really keeps things fresh, new and exciting for me.

GGotW: What is the story behind the name Lyliack?
Lyliack: Lyliack is Romanian for Bat. The spelling is slightly tweaked to make it more visually pleasing (at least to me). I also have a fondness for purple and it was doubly cool that lilac, in English, is a shade of purple. Silly, I know, but the simple things amuse me. lol

GGotW: How should one pronounce Lyliack?
Lyliack: It's not as much of a mouthful as one may think. =)
Lie-lack.

GGotW: What kind of stuff have you done as a model?
Lyliack: Wow...everything from adult work to glamour to parts. I've done spokes model work, art gallery pieces focusing on my tattoos, privately commissioned pieces for homes in Europe and the States, magazine work, coffee table books, internet stuff...the list goes on and on.

GGotW: What wont you do as a model?
Lyliack: I'm not interested in doing anything pornographic anymore. I've done my time in that world, and I've moved on. I love doing erotic work though, and it's hard finding artists and photographers who know where that very fine line between erotic and pornographic should be drawn, so I don't get to do a whole lot of it.

GGotW: What draws you to fetish?
Lyliack: I like the edginess of it. It tends to be very sensual, very erotic and has so many creative options, both for the model and the photographer.

GGotW: Who would you like to work with that you haven't?
Lyliack: Good question. There are a lot of vocalists and musicians I'd like to work with, both as a model (i.e., music videos) and as a musician -- Avenged Sevenfold, Evanescence, Disturbed, Alice Cooper, David Coverdale -- just to name a few.

As far as other models and photographers/artists go, I'd love to work with Olivia (her artwork is just so amazing), and anyone who is laid back, easy going, and shares a similar creative vision. I'm also still very eager to work with my husband, who is a photographer and production designer! lol Strange as it sounds, he and I still haven't had a chance to work together as model/photographer or in any kind of film capacity -- our projects just never seem to line up.

GGotW: What work are you most proud of?
Lyliack: Most proud of...that's tough. I loved being spokes model for Division 731 Studios. I think recently, its been singing the National Anthem at the Caged Supremacy fights. That was more of a challenge and more terrifying than any photo shoot I've ever done. I'm also very proud of my work as a make up artist. I'm just very happy to be so multifaceted in this industry -- it allows me more challenge, more experience and exposure and more opportunities to have fun doing something I love. And, I think, in all honesty, I'm proud of just about everything I do. Every new project is a new challenge and when it's over with, and all said and done, having something that I'm happy with and the artist/photographer is happy with, is more than enough reason to be proud.

GGotW: What haven't you done in fetish modeling that you'd like to?
Lyliack: Wow...tough question. I want to do more vampire themed fetish work and I'd love to do some blood fetish stuff. Graveyards and classic car/pin up stuff also hold a lot of interest for me.

Lyliack can be found at myspace.com/lyliack drop by and add her.

Profile: Frontline Films

Brian Clements is the Writer and Director of the films from Victoria's Frontline Films, a small company gaining recognition in the world of independent films. Last year's release of Meat Market 3 is being released on DVD this weekend at Lucky Bar on Yates St and now Frontline has another film ready for a Halloween release at the Roxy Theatre on Quarda St..

Meat Market 3 leaves behind the comedic elements and amateur production values of the
first two entries in the —Meat Market series in favour of a more straight-ahead horror approach with an additional psychological thriller influence. The movie opts primarily for a taut atmosphere of dread with a few good shocks and scares, and gore used only for maximum impact in generating ever-escalating story tension.

The Victoria DVD release will be at Lucky Bar at 517 Yates street on the evening of Friday, October 16th, from 8:30PM-midnight. Admission is $5. DVDs will be available for only $10, discounted $5 off the regular price of $15.

In the 1980's a book called Michelle Remembers helped dub the city of Victoria as the second Satanic Capital of the World after Geneva, Switerland. Brian Clement's new movie Dark Paradox explores the idea that this myth was not only partially true, but also partially inaccurate in suggesting the cult activity was Satanic when in fact it was based on the worship of ancient extraterrestrial "elder gods" in the vein of HP Lovecraft's fiction.

The Victoria premiere will be on Saturday October 20th at the Roxy Theatre at 11:30PM, after the theatre‘s regular screening schedule. Admission will be $7. The screening will be hosted by director Brian Clement, and DVDs of his other features will be available after the show.

Profile: NightShadows

NightShadows Photography is run by one of our own members here at Goth Girl of the Week. We've wanted to do profiles as part of the Goth Girl experience but a few interviews have failed and we've run out of Girls for the site so now is the time.

If you've got a Gothic related business from clothing maker to fangs or photography or any thing else, contact us at victoria.photography@gmail.com and we'll get you Profiled here where nearly 1000 people hit a week. If your a model or just want to be one and you've got some Gothic pictures of yourself, send us a line too.

GGotW: Why the name NightShadows?
NS: I got the name when my wife and I were writing the script to a Vampire short film we were making. The film is called NightShadows and the name came out of the fact that Vampires are creatures of the night and keep to the Shadows.

GGotW: When did this all start?
NS: It was 1997, I was working for a guy with some Pro level Hi-8 video cameras that he said I was free to use any time he was busy in editing.

GGotW: Is that when you started photography?
NS: Hell no, I was taking pictures with my dad's Canon AE-1 back in the mid eighties. Then I got a gig with a newspaper shooting at the David Foster Celebrity Softball Tournament. That started my long life as a photographer.

GGotW: Who have you worked for as a photographer?
NS: The list is pretty long, but I started with The Victoria Star Newspaper, that's who I covered the David Foster games for. I then moved on to Cut: To Magazine and worked at Attractions Magazine for seven years. Other than that I've been freelance with some nice gigs here and there.

GGotW: What kind of camera do you shoot with?
NS: My wife and I just picked up a Canon 400D and she has a Canon T2, we both have Canon AE-1's and that has been my main camera for about 25 years.

GGotW: What is the differance between the Canon AE-1 that you've been using and the new Canon 400D?
NS: The Canon AE-1 is a film camera and in my opinion the work horse of the Canon family. The 400D, or Rebel XTi as it's known in North America, is a 10.1MP digital beauty. I'll be using it on the next goth shoot.

GGotW: So are you going to shoot film and digital now?
NS: No actually I'm looking at going completely digital so I'm selling off my film equipment on eBay. Once I sell all this I'm going to purchase another Canon XTi (400D)

GGotW: Last year you did two goth shoots, what are you plans for this year and why haven't you done one yet?
NS: Last summer I gathered four models and two photographers, my wife and myself, we shot two rolls of film each at the back of Victoria's Legislative Grounds and came up with some fantastic images. Then a little later in the year I took Rowen Bellamy and her boyfriend, Photographer Greg Forsberg, into Beacon Hill Park and did another shoot, so far the weather and my schedule have not co-operated so now we are looking at an August 26th shoot.

GGotW: What do you have lined up for that shoot?
NS: We have five models at the moment and a MUA (make-up artist). The theme we're aiming for is Elegant Goth, we want to get away from the Street Goth that we had last time. We're set to shoot in Beacon Hill Park and my wife and I have picked out some awesome locations.

GGotW: What else have you got planned?
NS: Not too much, I work full time as a Retail Sale Manager and have had a lot of overtime, but were I can I want to do more photography and model photography is what I really enjoy.

GGotW: Where can people find you on the net?
NS: Wow, I seem to be all over the place, but my main website is NightShadows and I spend a lot of time on DeviantArt. I also have accounts on Model Mayhem and Model Place.

GGotW: Where are you from?
A: I was born in Morganton, NC. At the tender age of two my family decided to move to Rutherfordton,NC due to excellent job opportunites for both of my parents. I resided there up until recently when I decided to move to Charlotte, NC. I make frequent trips back to my small hometown to visit my family and friends.

GGotW: Can you describe your gothic lifestyle?
A: I find myself breaking the mold that society has, sadly, put on the gothic community. Like so many others, I always appreciate having a good time. I try not to dwell on the diappointments that life brings, but the rewards it offers. I'm always looking to have fun. I don't allow closed minded people to upset me. That is what's so great about the gothic genre are the sub genres that society is to blind to see. There are not any other lifestyles that can borrow from other types of lifestyles. It's not a weekend thing or a every other day sort of thing. It's everyday. If I were to be categorized it would definately have to be gothic punk. This can be seen in my fashion, musical taste, hobbies, choices in entertainment, etc.

GGotW: What is the gothic community like in your area?
A: Most of the clubs in the area have certain nights a month that cater to the gothic community. For example, Purgatory is held the second Saturday of every month at Amos Southend. It has a very industrial theme.

GGotW: What got you into modeling?
A: Even as a young girl I loved staring at myself in the mirror and being photographed. My mother almost entered me into a beauty pagent at the age of 4. I suppose I lucked up when she decided to back out. I also majored in television broadcasting. I anchored and reported for the local cable companies local college news and also interned for Asheville, NC news. I love being in front of the camera and thought it would be perfect for me to model since I didn't really fit the whole news reporter image.

GGotW: When did you start?
A: I started modeling for photographers portfolios a few years ago. I became the official model for the industrial band, "Madams", a little less that a year ago.

GGotW: What got you into acting?
A: In high school I took some ATV courses and that inspired me to major in Radio/TV broadcasting. I then found myself anchoring the college news on a local cable channel. I also reported for the show. I found myself being in a lot of videos for my classmates. I interned for WLOS-Asheville. Once I graduated from college, I found myself not really interested in pursuing that career.

GGotW: What have you done as an actress?
A: I have been in a couple of horror films that one of my friends produced. One was a zombie movie titled, Picking at Your Brain. The other was a vamp movie titled, Bloody Forgiveness. I had a great time doing both.

GGotW: What do you collect?
A: Munster's memorabilia-There is history behind that. Sunglasses-I have about 24 pair or so- I do wear my sunglasses at night! Halloween antiques and decorations- I have loved Halloween since I was a small child. And Halloween socks and stockings-Hey, every girl should accessorize from head to toe!

GGotW: What is your fascination with The Munsters?
A: It all goes back to the 80's. I remember my father and I watching it together when I was young. It was one of the few shows that made my father laugh so hard he would have to catch his breath afterwards. He loved Grandpa's crazy schemes. I have collected Munsters Memorabilia since 2002, when my father passed away. When I look at my collection it takes me back to that part of my childhood.

The MadamsGGotW: What does being the "official" model entail with the band "Madams"?
A: My image can be found in their album art, their flyers, their merchandise, etc. I also go on the road to make appearances at performances. I am there for shock-value. I am going to be colaborating with them on a few upcoming tracks.
